v Libyan government forces attack Haftar militias

·         GNA military spokesman Mohammed Kanunu issued a brief statement on the developments at Al-Watiya airbase in western Libya and targeted pro-Haftar soldiers who had fled to the airbase.
·         The operation destroyed three of Haftar's Su-22 fighter jets and many heavy weapons and facilities.
·         The damage caused by the operation played a key role in the GNA gaining air superiority in western regions of the country.

Tuesday marked a huge success for the GNA as it cleared 3,000 square kilometers of land occupied by Haftar’s militants following operations in western Libya.

  •  Some mercenaries have escaped back to Egypt but this is a rout equal to Ghrayan. There was an earlier attempt to take the base earlier but it failed. Now Turks are coordinating ground and air movement with the GNA. Remains to be seen if they let the Emiratis and French vanish

EXCLUSIVE: Mohammed bin Zayed pushed Assad to break the Idlib ceasefire

Abu Dhabi crown prince's plan to tie Turkey up in Syria and distract it from the battle for Tripoli quashed by Russia, sources tell MEE

Mohammed bin Zayed asked Bashar al-Assad to break the Idlib ceasefire and embroil Turkish troops in conflict (MEE illustration by Mohamad Elaasar)

·        According to sources familiar with MBZ’s plan, the crown prince agreed to pay Assad $3bn to reignite the offensive against Idlib, the rebels’ last redoubt, $1bn of which was due to be paid before the end of March. By the time the ceasefire was announced, $250m had already been paid upfront.

·     The deal was negotiated in the strictest secrecy. Abu Dhabi was particularly concerned that the Americans did not get to hear of it. Washington supported the Turkish military’s efforts to confront Assad’s forces in Idlib and had already expressed its anger with the crown prince over the release of $700m of frozen Iranian assets in October.

Turkey & Russia sent their troops to Libya One in support of GNA and another backing Khalifa Haftar’s led LNA.

A proxy war where the United Arab Emirates & Egypt provide continuous materialistic support to the Libyan National Army whereas Tunisian forces fight with LNA militias in support of the UN-backed GNA.
